About

This is the festival of Yasaka Shrine, which sits among the temple lodgings on Kami-Nishinomon-dori at the gates of Zenkoji, and locals have long called it Zenkoji's Gion Festival. The shrine's head shrine is Yasaka Shrine in Kyoto, and the festival was once ranked with the festivals of Kyoto's Yasaka Shrine and Hiroshima's Itsukushima Shrine as one of Japan's three great Gion festivals. A picture scroll from the Bunsei era of the Edo period already shows townspeople pulling the floats. On the main day, a child chosen to act for the deity, the Osakinori, leads the floats of each neighborhood toward Zenkoji, and they stop along the way to offer dances. On the eve, festival music and Japanese dance bring the temple town to life on an early summer evening.
