About
Shiratori Shrine in the Tamanoura district of Goto City holds its autumn grand festival, usually around late September. The portable shrine sets out from the shrine by boat, and once ashore its bearers carry it to every house in the district, shouting "joi-sajja." From evening, Tamanoura Kagura, part of the Goto Kagura tradition designated a national Important Intangible Folk Cultural Property, is performed at a temporary shrine, with dances praying for big catches and rich harvests continuing into the night to flute and drums. The festival closes as the portable shrine sails back to the shrine. It shows the faith and bonds of a community that has always lived alongside the sea. After a pause, it has recently been revived on a smaller scale. Tamanoura is about 90 minutes from Fukue Port by bus.
