About

In Hasami, a town built on pottery, the Sarayama district holds a festival where old tableware is traded in for new. The name is written with the characters for "tableware swap" and read kikae. Bring along dishes you no longer use, even cracked or chipped ones, and participating shops will sell you a piece you like at half price in return. The limit is one swap per person at each shop. Only ceramics are accepted, but they do not have to be Hasami ware, and chips are fine. The idea is a cycle of making, using and handing things on, combined with warm hospitality and care for the environment. Shops also put on their own special deals. In 2026 the festival is planned for December 5 and December 6.
