About
For one day a year, Gosemachi, a merchant quarter that prospered from the Edo period, rolls out the welcome mat. Many of its townhouses (machiya) still stand, and some that are usually shut open their doors just for the occasion. The Akatsuka residence, a Nara Prefecture cultural property, becomes a machiya museum, and you'll also find tea stalls set up in townhouses and a stamp rally. Hold up your smartphone on the "time-slip" tour and the street as it once looked appears on screen. One past edition even restaged the lantern performance from Kamotsuba Shrine's Susuki Lantern Offering. The area is 5 to 10 minutes on foot from Kintetsu Gose and JR Gose stations, and organizers ask visitors to use public transport.
