About
On February 11, Kashihara Jingu, the shrine dedicated to Emperor Jimmu, holds Kigensai, the weightiest festival on its calendar. The Nihon Shoki records that Jimmu set up his palace at Kashihara, southeast of Mount Unebi, and took the throne as the first emperor in the spring of a shin'yu year; converted to today's calendar, that day is February 11. Because Kashihara Jingu is one of the shrines that receive imperial envoys, an envoy attends on the Emperor's behalf and lays his offerings before the deity. The ceremony looks back on the enthronement and the founding of the nation and prays for its prosperity, its people's peace of mind and peace in the world. Anyone may watch.
