About

At Taima-dera in Katsuragi, the memorial day of Princess Chujo brings a living re-enactment of her welcome into paradise. A bridge is set up across the grounds, and figures of twenty-five bodhisattvas, with Kannon and Seishi in front, move slowly along it to meet the princess on a visit home to this world and lead her back to the Pure Land. The rite rests on the legend that, in the Hoki era, she was greeted by the bodhisattvas and taken in her living body to Amida Buddha's paradise. The procession begins at 4 p.m. and is free to watch from the grounds. The same day offers prayers over undergarments, an illustrated sermon on the Taima Mandala, a special show of temple treasures tied to the princess, and a rare opening of the rear doors of the National Treasure mandala shrine.
