About
Yamatokoriyama's spring festival takes place in cherry blossom season, centered on the ruins of Koriyama Castle. Three things to see: the goldfish show in front of Yanagisawa Shrine's hall, the Juzukuri service in which a rosary 162 meters long with 1,080 beads is wrapped around the castle keep's base, and the Byakko Togyo, a parade of children in white robes and fox masks through town. It began in 1961, when the head of the tourism association learned that many stone Buddhas and gravestones had been built into the keep base and walls, and raised donations from residents to hold the rosary service for them and the castle's spirits. From the next year it was timed to match the goldfish show, held at cherry blossom time since 1907.
