About
Ijimino Park's iris garden in Shibata, counted among Japan's four great iris gardens, hosts this early-summer flower festival. Its 1.8 hectares hold around 600,000 plants of some 300 varieties of the iris family. Ayame irises bloom in mid-May and kakitsubata in late May, followed by Japanese irises (hanashobu) from early June, and the festival is set for when the hanashobu, which fill most of the garden, look their best. In the evening the garden is illuminated and paper lanterns glow, while food stalls and kitchen cars come out by day. If you're lucky, fireflies flit at the far end. Entry is free, there's a large free car park, and wheelchairs can be borrowed. From Shibata Station it's about 10 minutes by taxi, or about 15 minutes on a rental bike from the nearby tourist information center.
