About
In November the grounds of Yahiko Shrine, Echigo's foremost shrine, fill with chrysanthemums for the Niigata Prefecture Chrysanthemum Exhibition, said to be unmatched in Japan for the quality and variety of its entries. Growers display flowers they have raised with great skill over 1 year, and the entries are judged. Unlike chrysanthemum doll shows, the point here is the flowers themselves. The crowd favorite is the great landscape bed made of 30,000 small cutting-grown chrysanthemums, with a fresh theme each year. It's a seasonal fixture of autumn in Echigo. Parking around the shrine is free, but lots near Yahiko Park charge during the event. It's about 15 minutes on foot from Yahiko Station on the JR Yahiko Line.
