About

In this autumn festival, the deity of Yusuhara Hachimangu Shrine in Oita City travels to a temporary shrine on the shore at Ikushi. After the opening rites, a portable shrine leaves the main shrine and makes the 4 km journey. In the days that follow there are special prayer services, a hojo-e rite releasing doves and crucian carp to comfort the spirits of living things, kagura dances and a fireworks show. A big market sets up in the grounds, with stalls selling shikishi-mochi, a rice cake said to copy the shape of a feudal lord's cushion. In the Edo period this was one of the three great markets of western Japan and the largest event in the Funai castle town.
