About
On December 1 and 2 each year, Saijo Inari in Takamatsu, northern Okayama City, holds one of its three major festivals. Talismans received the year before are heaped onto a specially built goma fire altar and burned in thanks for a year of protecting the family. Holding your body or hands toward the flames is said to keep illness away for the year ahead. The rite, unique to this temple, recalls a legend: the founder Hoon Daishi prayed for two ailing emperors to recover, and when he later gave thanks to the talisman he had used, it vanished with the incense smoke.
