About
Counted among Naha's three major festivals, Naha Hari brings dragon boat racing to Shinko Pier at Naha Port in early summer. Hari racing is said to have arrived from China some six hundred years ago and continues as a tradition of praying for safe voyages and prosperity. Each day has its own focus. Day one opens with races between the city's junior high schools, followed by PTA crews and general teams of coworkers and friends. On day two, residents and visitors alike can try paddling a dragon boat, and the Naha Coast Guard opens a patrol vessel to the public. The last day brings hard-fought races in the general A and B divisions and ends with the traditional Hon Bari and the prayer race known as Ugan Bari. At the nearby Naha Hari Hall, panels and costumes trace the history of the event.
