About
For the first three days of the New Year, Shurijo Castle Park welcomes the year with the culture of the Ryukyu Kingdom. The king and queen make an appearance, uzagaku court music is performed, and part of Chohai Okishiki, the royal New Year ceremony, is re-enacted. A stage program of Ryukyuan dance and classical Ryukyuan music is held as well. Inside the Yuhokoriden hall, a film shows how the ceremony used to unfold in front of the main hall, and at the Suimui-kan visitor center you can try New Year calligraphy. Across the three days, the program offers many ways into the colorful court culture of the kingdom.
