Ojima, a small island in Nanjo known for its fishermen, holds its Sea God Festival with hari boat races on the fourth day of the fifth lunar month, and the event is well known across Okinawa. The main race comes first in the morning, and then workplace teams that registered in advance race one another. It all happens just off the island's shore, so you can watch the tradition up close.
