About
Known affectionately as "Kawachi no Harugoto," this grand festival at Domyoji Tenmangu on March 25 is regarded as the rite that tells Kawachi spring has come. From 1:00 p.m. a procession of children in costume brings rapeseed flowers to the shrine. Yellow "natane goku" dumplings are given out from March 24 to 26, and the shrine grounds host an antiques market and a special display of items linked to Sugawara no Michizane; March 25 is also the monthly Tenjin fair day. Legend says rapeseed flowers were in bloom when Michizane stopped here on his way into exile in Dazaifu. His aunt, the nun Kakuju, ground the rice from the meals she set out for him each day into flour and shaped it into yellow, plum-shaped dumplings, which gained a reputation for curing illness.
