About
Each neighborhood in Kishiwada has its own danjiri, a heavy carved wooden float, and during the festival they are hauled through streets that still feel like a castle town. By day the pulling mixes finesse with sheer force, and by night the floats glow with lanterns. The September festival takes place in the Kishiwada and Haruki districts, with trial runs before the eve and main days, and other districts follow in October. Each float has its own character, down to the designs of its carvings. Tradition holds that it began in the mid-Edo period when the lord of Kishiwada held an Inari festival to pray for a good harvest, giving it more than 300 years of history.
