About

Osaka's summer festival season gets under way with this three-day festival from June 30 to July 2 at Aizendo Shomanin. Locals say summer festivals "begin with Aizen, pass through Tenjin and end with Sumiyoshi," and it is one of the city's three great summer festivals. At noon on the first day, the Hoekago palanquin parade leaves from in front of Tennoji Park (Tenshiba) and travels along Tanimachi-suji, with young women chosen as Aizen-musume taking turns in the palanquin, which is lifted high once it reaches the temple. During the festival the hidden principal image of Aizen Myoo and the Dainichi Daisho Kongo image in the Tahoto pagoda are put on special view. There is also a summer purification service, sparrow dancing and food stalls. The temple is said to have been founded by Prince Shotoku.
