About

For about a week in cherry blossom season, the Japan Mint in Tenma, Osaka, lets the public walk a path of roughly 560 meters along the old Yodo River inside its grounds. You enter at the south gate and exit at the north gate in one direction only, and since there is no turning back, the event is called Torinuke, "walking through." Most trees are late-blooming double-flowered varieties such as Kanzan, Shogetsu, Fugenzo and Yokihi, and in 2026 there were 331 trees of 140 varieties. One variety is named "flower of the year" each year; in 2026 it was Gyoiko, with its greenish-yellow blossoms. The custom began in 1883, when Mint director Endo Kinsuke felt the blossoms were too good for staff alone and should be shared with the public. Advance reservations have been required in recent years, and Temmabashi Station is about a 15-minute walk away.
