About
In autumn, kilns, shops and other venues all over Arita each stage their own events in this town-wide ceramics festival, built around the idea of hospitality through food and tableware. Browse for a bowl or plate to take home, catch a rare open firing of a wood-burning kiln, sample dishes served only this season, or wander the streets in kimono. The Kyushu Ceramic Museum runs a festival of its own at the same time, while Arita Sera holds a memorial rite for tea bowls and a bowl fair. Arita is regarded as the birthplace of Japanese porcelain, and the event suits an unhurried walk. Drivers can use temporary car parks, free shuttle buses run, and JR Kami-Arita and JR Arita are the closest stations.
