About

Held on the Jobaru River, which runs north to south through Kanzaki, this summer festival has a day program and a night program and counts as one of the city's three big summer festivals. The star is the hangii, a large tub-shaped boat long used for gathering water chestnuts. By day, racers sit cross-legged inside and fight the wobble as they paddle toward the finish, a sight you will hardly find anywhere else in Japan. Age-group races need advance sign-up, but there are family activities open on the day. After dark the festival moves on to stage shows and fireworks. The 2026 festival took place on September 5. Entry and parking are free.
