About

This viewing event at Chiriku Doi Park in Miyaki is timed for the lotus season. The park has about 9,700 square meters of lotus ponds, and from late June into summer the Two-Thousand-Year Lotus, the Maihiren and the Large Lotus open in turn; the event covers the peak of the first two. Maihiren was bred by crossing the Two-Thousand-Year Lotus with a yellow variety, Oji-ren. Blooms open early on summer mornings and are a vivid pink when new. Members of the Miyaki group that has looked after the lotuses for years are on hand to explain the plants and their care, and a market runs at the Ichimura Kiyoshi Medical Community Center next door. The park was created by the town from part of the Chiriku embankment built by famed flood-control engineer Narutomi Hyogo Shigeyasu. Entry and parking are free.
