About
Each year around mid-January, the grounds of Inasa Shrine in Shiroishi host the Saito Goma ceremony of Gyokusenbo, one of the sixteen temple lodges of Mt. Inasa. Priests in yamabushi garb light a pyre to summon Fudo Myoo, a rite said to burn up worldly desires and chase away bad luck. The finale is the fire walk: participants cross the remains of the burned-out pyre barefoot, and many visitors step in too, praying for good health and a safe household through the year. Watching and taking part are both free. The shrine has free parking, about 15 minutes' drive from the Shiroishi town office.
