About
This festival in Hidaka is timed to the blooming of red spider lilies (manjushage) at Kinchakuda, a 22-hectare flat area enclosed by a sweeping bend of the clear Koma River; its outline resembles a drawstring purse, or kinchaku, hence the name. In autumn the lily colony blazes crimson, as if a red carpet had been rolled out across the ground. Stalls sell local food and specialties, and mainly on weekends and holidays a stage hosts festival music, dance, taiko and yosakoi. Admission to the park is charged while the lilies bloom, but that period is decided separately from the festival dates, and flowers may not yet be open on the festival's first day.
