About
Held on the third Sunday of October and the day before, this is Kawagoe's largest festival, joining the grand rites and sacred procession of Hikawa Shrine, the town's guardian shrine, with a lavish float event. Floats crowned with finely made figures are pulled all over town, especially through the district of clay-walled warehouses. Don't miss the hikkawase: several floats square off at an intersection and try to outdo one another with flutes, drums and dancing, and at night, with lanterns thrust high in the air, the excitement peaks. This urban festival grew under the influence of Edo's grand festivals and is a National Important Intangible Folk Cultural Property, as well as part of UNESCO's Intangible Cultural Heritage listing for Yama, Hoko, Yatai float festivals.
