About

Known as a religious rite that tells the Chichibu area spring has come, this fire-walking festival is held at the foot of Mt. Hodo in Nagatoro. Its formal name refers to a great outdoor goma fire ritual and austere fire-walk, a secret rite led personally by the chief priest of Daigoji, head temple of the Shingon school. It takes place in the car park below the Hodosan Ropeway base station: once the great goma fire has burned, mountain ascetics walk barefoot over the flames. Crossing the sacred fire is believed to burn away every misfortune and obstacle and to bring fortune and protection from bad luck. Members of the public can follow the ascetics across.
