About

In early summer, while the lavender is in flower, a festival is held at Sennen no Sono, a lavender garden in the Kamagata area of Ranzan. About 13,000 plants grow across roughly 3.6 hectares, mainly Grosso, a variety with a strong, sweet scent. Visiting is free during the festival, with contributions welcome. On weekends there is lavender picking and craft making, and stalls sell lavender soft-serve and other sweets, plus seedlings, cut flowers and local vegetables. The garden's name, "Garden of a Thousand Years," carries a wish for peaceful times that Hatakeyama Shigetada, who lived at the nearby Sugaya castle site, and Kiso Yoshinaka, born in this area, may well have shared. The Ranzan Town Tourism Association organizes the event.
