About
From July 25 to 27, some 9,000 lanterns fill the grounds of Tamura Shrine in Tsuchiyama, Koka, offered by parishioners and other worshippers, and after dark the whole precinct glows. On July 25 the parish children pull a festival cart around the neighborhood and bring it into the shrine as an offering. July 26 brings ceremonies of thanks to Sakanoue no Tamuramaro, and the evening turns lively with stage shows, food stalls and bingo. On the evening of July 27 a rite prays for the safety and prosperity of all who donated lanterns. The festival began as a way to comfort the spirit of the enshrined general Tamuramaro and honor what he achieved.
