About
On December 31, Enryakuji on Mount Hiei performs the Oni-oi, a ceremony of chasing away demons, around a roaring fire near the Konponchudo hall. The temple's yearly calendar lists the Oni-oi together with the New Year's Eve bell for that night, so you can end the year on the mountain. Driving takes about 40 minutes from the Kyoto-Higashi interchange of the Meishin Expressway by way of the Nishi-Otsu Bypass and the Hieizan Driveway, or about 20 minutes from JR Otsukyo Station on the Kosei Line.
