About
Shirahige Shrine, which claims the longest history of any shrine in Omi, holds its autumn festival on September 5 and 6. At its heart is naruko-mairi: bring a child in their second year by the traditional count, and the deity gives the child a name; using that name for a few days is believed to bring a safe, happy life. The practice is recorded in Edo-period writings, and on both days visitors arrive from Hokuriku, the Kyoto-Osaka-Kobe area and elsewhere while the festival's famous stalls line up. Prayers on the day need no reservation. Parking is scarce, so on September 5 a one-way shuttle bus runs from Kita-Komatsu Station past the shrine to Omi-Takashima Station; you cannot board it at Omi-Takashima.
