About
On February 14 every year, Itsukushima Shrine in Kohama, Yunotsu, holds a festival to calm fire that is said to exist only at this shrine. Each household brings firewood to the shrine, a fire burns all night, and people walk through town chanting "Netara okose, oji ya oji, Goro no oji." The story goes that a great fire once broke out in Kohama and could not be put out, until a single white heron flew in and circled above it and the flames died. People tied this to the tale of Goro, the youngest child of Kohama's god, who was said to have raced around town all night, angry at being given no land, and began to worship him as the fire god Kojin.
