About

On June 5 every year, at Tamawakasu-no-Mikoto Shrine, the head shrine of old Oki Province, eight sacred horses storm up to the shrine in the horse-entry rite. In the afternoon each horse, from one of eight districts and guided by six handlers, races in a single rush from the gate to the front of the shrine, kicking up dust amid neighing, shouting and cheering. The day also includes a rice-planting rite, horseback archery and a portable-shrine procession, and it ranks among the three great festivals of Oki. According to legend, a governor of Oki once summoned the island's gods to this shrine rather than visiting each in turn, and they came riding horses, which is how the name Goryoe and the horse-entry rite arose. It is a designated Intangible Cultural Property of Shimane Prefecture.
