About

Around the Boys' Festival, Fujisan Hongu Sengen Taisha in Fujinomiya hosts a festival built around yabusame, archery from horseback. Shrine tradition dates it to 1193, when Minamoto no Yoritomo, hunting at the foot of Mount Fuji, dedicated yabusame here to pray for victory in arms and peace across the land; old records mention it, and it has lasted more than eight centuries. The main day opens with an ancient-style ceremony by a local preservation society, followed by a parade of about a hundred people dressed as Kamakura-era warriors and other figures. Then, in the Shinji Yabusame, Ogasawara-school archers gallop down the Sakura no Baba and strike two targets one after the other. On the eve, purification rites take place by the Fuji River and horses run in the Kamunakake rite. Targets that have been hit are treasured as good-luck charms.
