About

Cape Tsumekizaki, a scenic headland on the Suzaki Peninsula in Shimoda, holds a narcissus festival when its colony of narcissus is in flower. At the height of the season, as many as three million white blossoms are said to bloom, and their sweet fragrance hangs in the air. The peak usually comes in January, and the festival is scheduled to match. Different patches open at different times, so the season stretches out. Some years the program includes Shimoda taiko drumming and free servings of a fishermen's miso stew handed down locally. The cape stays mild in winter, and its seaside paths with wide ocean views make for a good hike. Ride the Tsumekizaki-bound bus from Izukyu-Shimoda Station to the end of the line; the flowers are right there.
