About

Each autumn, Shizuoka City becomes a giant stage for one of Asia's largest performing arts festivals. Since 1992 it has run under the motto "the city is a theater," with top artists from Japan and abroad performing in streets and plazas. Venues spread across downtown, including Sunpu Castle Park, Aoba Symbol Road and Gofukucho, and reach into Suruga and Shimizu wards too. Alongside the On Stage shows, where accomplished acts take fixed spots, there is the Walking Street program, in which performances spring up unannounced on street corners. Artists based in Busan, South Korea, Shizuoka's partner city, also come over. Crowds fill the city throughout, and the festival is an essential part of autumn in Shizuoka.
