About
The satsuki azalea festival at the Kanuma City Flower and Tree Center takes place in a city known as Japan's top producer of satsuki. It has run since 1972 to open up new markets, bring in visitors and give the local industry a lift. The main draw is a large exhibition of about 300 satsuki bonsai carefully grown by enthusiasts across Japan, including entries from abroad. There is also satsuki for sale, Kanuma specialties, a contest in which high school students compete with arrangements of satsuki and other flowers, seedling giveaways and workshops, together making it one of Japan's largest satsuki events. Admission is free; workshops and similar activities cost extra.
