About

Moka's largest event spans 3 days in summer. It opens at Osaki Shrine with a send-off ceremony praying for safe processions, good harvests and freedom from disease, after which the portable shrines and floats head out into town. On the middle day the city center turns into a car-free festival plaza where more than twenty mikoshi, including the shrine's main and Aramiya shrines, children's mikoshi and ones handmade by junior high school students, mingle with 8 floats and festival musicians. That night the mikoshi are carried into the river, and about 15,000 fireworks go up beside the Gogyo River east of City Hall, launched close enough to feel the impact. The final day ends with the procession that returns the mikoshi to the shrine.
