About
Each spring, the Ningyo Bunka Koryukan in Katsuura Town fills with an enormous display of hina dolls for Girls' Day. What makes it special is that the dolls come from households all over Japan that no longer display them; each is given a memorial service before going on show. The centerpiece is the "hundred-step tier," roughly 8 meters high, and around 30,000 dolls are arranged throughout the hall. The event started in the spring of 1988, and 2026 was its thirty-eighth year. On a weekend at the end of January, the hall usually takes in dolls for the memorial service, and dolls brought then are honored and added to the display. Hours are 9:00 to 16:00. From JR Tokushima Station, take the Tokushima Bus Katsuura Line about 60 minutes to the Ningyo Bunka Koryukan-mae stop.
