About
Torigoe Shrine, which faces Kuramaebashi-dori and is said to be about 1,370 years old, holds its grand festival every June, when the procession of its great mikoshi is an early-summer fixture in Kuramae that usually draws hundreds of thousands of people. Nicknamed the "Senkan Mikoshi," the great mikoshi weighs about four tonnes and is said to be the heaviest in Tokyo. Sarutahiko, the tengu-like guide, tekomai dancers and children holding five-colored flags lead the procession. After dark, during the night festival, the original lantern mikoshi returns to the shrine ringed by tall lantern poles, and the illuminated procession is the scene to catch. Kuramae Station on the Toei Asakusa Line is about 6 minutes away on foot.
