About

Hasedera, an old Tendai temple on Mt. Utsubuki in Kurayoshi, starts the year by handing out good luck in a midnight free-for-all. Once the first Kannon service of the year is over, the Goo Sazuke begins: worshippers grapple for wooden lucky sticks printed with the sacred goo seal, wishing for good business, rich harvests and a safe home. There are 12 sticks in a normal year and 13 in a leap year. A Kannon hall is set up on the day for those unable to make the climb, and down on Honmachi-dori the Kannon Market fills the street with stalls and an old-time market feel. Inside the main hall, the shrine cabinet is a National Important Cultural Property and one of only a few late Muromachi-period structures in the San'in region. The Kurayoshi tourism association lists the Goo Sazuke for the third Saturday of February and the market for the third Sunday.
