About
Taikoyama Land, a prefectural park in Imizu, hosts a sagicho fire to send off the New Year decorations. A 15-meter tower is assembled around thick, green moso bamboo, then stacked with the shimekazari straw ornaments, kadomatsu pine arrangements and first calligraphy of the year brought in by local households, and everything is burned together. The event was started in 1977 by municipalities near Taikoyama as a community gathering, and it moved to Taikoyama Land in 1986. Once a Shinto priest kindles the sacred fire, kids can try spraying water with local volunteer firefighters, and food stands serve warming ramen and sweet red bean soup, so it makes a nice family outing. You may bring lucky charms, calligraphy and kadomatsu, but not stuffed toys, household shrines, New Year cards, plastic items, rice cakes or mandarin oranges.
