About
On October 14, Susa Shrine in Arida's Senda district stages a boisterous autumn festival built around six sea bream placed before the deity. Participants grapple for the fish, since tradition holds that anyone who comes away with one will enjoy big catches all year. The shrine is revered as a protector of seafarers and a ward against misfortune, and the ancient Engishiki register ranks it among the major shrines. Its own records say that in 713 it was brought from a peak in Yoshino to the hilltop, but ships that sailed past without lowering their sails kept wrecking, so it soon moved to where it stands now. Patronized by the Kishu domain, it treasures a sword donated by Tokugawa Yoshimune, an Important Cultural Property, and its crest, a summer peach, is rarely seen anywhere else.
