About

On April 27, Dojoji Temple in Hidakagawa holds a bell memorial rooted in the tale of Anchin and Kiyohime, held to soothe the spirit of Anchin, who died inside the temple bell when Kiyohime's obsessive passion set it ablaze. The thing to see is the Janjaka Odori, where a giant serpent, Kiyohime in her transformed shape, is paraded through the streets and along the river as she chases her quarry. In the Engido hall, the story is narrated with the help of unrolled picture scrolls. Regarded as the oldest temple in the Kishu region, Dojoji is said to have been founded in 701 at the wish of Emperor Monmu, and it safeguards a National Treasure Thousand-Armed Kannon among many Important Cultural Properties.
