About

Niutsuhime Shrine in Katsuragi holds its summer purification, Nagoshi no Oharae, at the end of June, one of two great purifications it performs each year. From June 1 to 29 a large ring of cogon grass (chinowa) stands in the grounds, and anyone may walk through it to be cleansed. On the evening of June 30 comes the ceremony itself, which sweeps away the impurities gathered over the past six months and asks for good health through the summer. Plan around that last day: the ring is rebuilt from the morning for the ceremony, so only participants can pass through it on June 30. Take the Katsuragi community bus from Kaseda Station on the JR Wakayama Line for about 30 minutes to the Niutsuhime-jinja-mae stop, then walk about two minutes.
