About
The Kokawa Matsuri belongs to Kokawa Ubusuna Shrine, guardian of Kokawa-dera Temple, and ranks among the three great festivals of Kishu. Come for the eve festival night, when ornate danjiri floats crowd onto Kokawa Tonmaka-dori, the street linking Kokawa Station with the temple's great gate, and are hauled along it with gusto. The main day centers on the Togyo-shiki procession, which recreates the victorious homecoming of Funanushi, son of Otomo no Kujiko, after he drove off a band of rebels. Children's danjiri, a rice-cake scattering and a performance by Kokawa Junior High School add to the program. Drivers can use parking set up at nearby sports grounds and schools.
