About
On September 26, a day tied to their deities, the twin shrines of Hinokuma and Kunikakasu in Wakayama City hold their annual grand festival, the most important rite of their calendar. The moment to watch is the food offering: rice, sake, rice cakes and delicacies from sea and mountain are heaped on eleven ritual stands, which priests pass along one by one, hand to hand, to the altar. The rite thanks the gods for their everyday blessings and prays for peace, the nation's well-being and plentiful harvests. Hinokuma Shrine's ceremony begins at 10:00, followed by Kunikakasu Shrine's at 11:00. The two shrines stand side by side in the same grounds and are called Nichizengu together.
