About
The grand festival of Dewa Sanzan Shrine, popularly called the Hana Matsuri or Flower Festival, is held every July 15 at the summit of Mt. Haguro to pray for bountiful harvests and family well-being. After rites in the main hall, the portable shrines of the three sacred mountains are carried out, led by bonten poles decorated with artificial flowers made to look like rice blossoms. Once the procession has circled the Mitarashi (Kagami) Pond, the crowd filling the grounds scrambles to grab the flowers, long believed to ward off evil and bring a good harvest.
