About
Sakata prospered through the Kitamaebune trading ships and its trade with Edo, Kyoto and Osaka, and many fine hina dolls carried here by those ships survive in the town’s old families, carefully kept to this day. From March 1 to April 3 each year, venues around the city put these heirloom dolls, handed down since the Edo period, on show, alongside rustic Udogawara dolls made locally and kasafuku, decorations of many ornaments that each carry a wish. Display dates differ from venue to venue. The 2026 edition marked the event's 30th anniversary with a special lecture on hina dolls.
