About
Mt. Chokai Omonoimi Shrine has two lower shrines, at Warabioka and at Fukura. The grand festival of the Fukura shrine, known locally as the Fukura Festival, is held every year on May 4 and 5, run mainly by an association of the young heirs of local families. May 4 is the eve festival and May 5 the main day. A yakko-buri procession of retainers leads the portable shrine through the neighborhood, joined by children in their best clothes carrying flowers. The highlight is Fukura Dengaku, also called the Hanagasa dance, a ritual field dance praying for good health and a rich harvest and designated an intangible folk cultural property of Yamagata Prefecture. Food stalls line the streets, and watching is free.
