About

Summer evenings in Iwakuni bring cormorant fishing to the Nishiki River, close to the scenic Kintaikyo Bridge, and you can watch it from a roofed pleasure boat. Ukai is a traditional way of catching sweetfish (ayu) with trained cormorants, and the boats go out from June, when the ayu season opens. The cormorant masters work their birds on hand-held cords as they dive for fish, and you are near enough to feel the warmth of the fire baskets. The boats are operated by the Iwakuni City Tourism Association's cormorant fishing office, and reservations are generally required. Some dates are designated Yukata Days for those who want to come in summer kimono.
