About
At Dan-no-ura in Shimonoseki, Shinto priests hang a sacred shimenawa rope on a large rock standing in the sea. Legend tells of a time when downpours, typhoons, fires and disease came one after another, until a divine message promised the misfortunes would stop if a toppled boulder were raised; when the rock was stood upright, the disasters ended. The rite takes place on the shore near Tateishi Inari and is a familiar winter sight on the Kanmon Strait. The prefectural tourism site gives the date as December 10, and Akama Shrine handles inquiries. From JR Shimonoseki Station, ride a bus for about 10 minutes to the Dan-no-ura stop and walk about 5 minutes.
